Pocket Dispatch

The challenge

In a field emergency, a lot of time goes to one question: "where are you, exactly?" Where street addresses are incomplete and the phone network cannot pass a caller’s location to dispatch, the answer is relayed by voice, written down, read over a radio and sometimes misheard. Antigua and Barbuda, where the idea started, is one of those places. Enterprise dispatch systems that solve this are priced for large agencies, so most small ones still run on the radio and the phone. The goal: a dispatch platform a small agency or private field team can sign up for and use the same day.

Pocket Dispatch

How it works

  1. The Create Location Request dialog in the Pocket Dispatch console

    Text the caller a link

The dispatcher enters the caller’s number and sends a secure link by SMS. Nothing for the caller to install.

  2. A caller’s live position pinned on the dispatch map with the call detail panel open

Their location lands on the map

One tap in the phone’s browser streams live GPS onto the dispatcher’s map, with the call details beside it.

  3. Assigning a unit to a call from the call detail panel

    Assign the nearest unit

The dispatcher triages by priority and assigns the closest qualified crew from the same screen.

  4. A new assignment alert in the responder app

The crew gets it on their phone

The responder app alerts the crew, who acknowledge and update their status in one tap, even through dead zones.

Pocket Dispatch

What we built

Live caller location

A texted link shares the caller’s GPS from the browser, with no app to install.

Priority triage

One queue sorted by severity, with overdue-call alerts and areas of responsibility on the map.

Responder app

iOS and Android from one React Native codebase, with push alerts and one-tap status updates.

Works through dead zones

The responder app queues updates offline and sends them when the signal returns.

Caller registry

Landline and basic-phone callers read out a six-character code, and the call opens with their home location.

Replay and AI summaries

Every call is logged, replayable on the map and summarized by AI in one click.

Multi-tenant SaaS

Isolated data per organization, role-based access, self-serve sign-up and Stripe per-seat billing.

Three languages

English, French and Spanish across the console, the responder app and the caller pages.

Built with

  • TypeScript

Pocket Dispatch

How we ran it

The delivery discipline we bring to client projects, applied to our own product.

    Production-readiness review

A written assessment of safety, resilience and deployment, with fixes landed the same week.

  3. Jul 14

    Multi-tenant, with built-in maps

Organizations isolated from each other, self-served map tiles and the first French translation.

  4. Aug 1

    Self-serve sign-up and billing

    Email sign-up, a 30-day trial and Stripe per-seat billing.

  5. Aug 16

    Zero-downtime deploys

Rolling deploys behind load balancers, and the responder app fully translated.

  6. Aug 18

    Call replay

Any past call can be replayed minute by minute on the map from Reports.

  7. Oct 6

    Live at pocketdispatch.com

Production on Google Cloud, 12 weeks after the first commit.

  8. Oct 18

    Spanish and the caller registry

A third language across the whole product, and a way to reach callers without smartphones.

  9. Oct 24

    Help centre and security pass

55 help articles in three languages, security scanning and a tenant-isolation review.

What kept it shippable

  • Automated tests on every change from the first commit, now more than 1,300
  • A written production-readiness assessment in the first week
  • Zero-downtime rolling deploys, so updates never take the service down
  • A database restore drill, so the backups are proven, not assumed
  • Security scanning and a tenant-isolation review before launch marketing
  • Documentation kept in step with the code: 55 help articles in three languages

Pocket Dispatch
